Near the end of 1984, Ray Ozzie founded Iris Associates Inc., under contract and funded by Lotus, to develop the first release of Lotus Notes. The first release of Notes (1.0) shipped in 1989. Read the long story about the history of Notes and Domino.
On March 10, 2005, Microsoft acquired Groove Networks. Groove's founder was Ray Ozzie and he became chief technology officer of Microsoft.
On June 15, 2006, Ozzie assumed the title of Microsoft chief software architect previously held by Chairman Bill Gates, and is working side by side with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight responsibilities in anticipation of Gates’ departure from a day-to-day role in Microsoft in July 2008.
