wink - The Social Search Engine

wink is a social search engine powered by the people. It indexes tagged content from Digg, Yahoo MyWeb, Furl, Slashdot and other social bookmarking services and displays them on search result pages.

Create your own account on wink. Search, tag, vote and block as you please.
If you like a page (a search result), then add it to your favourites by clicking on a star. If you don't like it, then block it by clicking in the blocking symbol and you won't see it again.



wink also synchronizes will del.icio.us and it is also possible to edit wiki entries inside wink. An explanation and a reference to wikipedia is presented for the meaning of the search word.


A search plugin for Firefox can be installed.

File sharing in Firefox with AllPeers

I read a blogpost on Webbomedia by Per-Åke Olsson about a new firefox extension called AllPeers. It is a cross-over between instant messaging and file sharing. Files are shared by drag-and-drop to your friends and family.

It is using Bit-torrent technique but no uploading is required. The data is being loaded directly from each user's hard drive and there is no size limit. It is only possible however to share and upload with users on your contact list.



Seems like a great and useful application. Haven't been able to use it fully yet though due to few people in my contact list.

Now, where can I find the latest firefox 2.0 release candidate?
I was thinking about that the other day and don't think it's trivial to find it on the firefox homepage.

There are several options. Search for it on Google or Technorati, read some blogs or post a comment and ask for it. And there's another way, use a torrent site. There's always someone who has already uploaded it.

ScrapeTorrent lets you search 4 different torrent sites and presents the results from each and one of them on the same page with torrent links.



This link searches for everything uploaded about Firefox on:

• MiniNova

You can filter zero seeders which is a great feature.

Google MP3 Player - a new GMail feature

I read the Google Blogoscoped and found a blog post about Google MP3 Player. Appearantely Amit Agarwal on Digital Inspiration has been digging into the GMail code and found a MP3 player. It is actually the Google Video Player that can be used to play any mp3 file even without having to login to GMail.

I have followed Philipp Lenssen's advice and put it into an iframe. This way we get a Google-like interface with a progressbar and sound adjustments.

Time magazine has published a list of the 50 coolest websites. It should have been a list of the 500 coolest websites if you ask me. There are so much going on on the Internet right now and we are experiencing an exponential growing of new cool sites and features following the trends of web 2.0.

Plans for 'Locations' in Hannover

Mary Beth Raven, the lead project designer for the Hannover project has in a posting on her blog mentioned the plans for 'Locations'.

The old concept of 'Locations' from Notes will be kept but reduced:

• Office (network) -> Online
• Island (disconnected) -> Offline
• Travel (notes direct dialup) -> Travel (to remove?)
  
• Home (notes direct dialup) -> Home (to remove?)
  
• Home (network dialup) -> remove
  
• Internet -> remove
  

In Hannover it will be possible to see all old locations from Notes 7 and to manage locations. When managing locations and choosing to create a new or to edit an existing one the following dialog box will appear:

Windows Live Writer

Microsoft has just released Microsoft Live Writer, a tool following the trend of web 2.0 making it easier for us to share information like blogging and photo publishing. It's a beta and some of its features are:

• WYSIWYG Authoring (blog authoring)
• Photo publishing
• Map publishing
• Writer SDK

The .NET framework is required.



In a former blog post I was writing about a new web browser called Flock. Using flock I can publish posts to different blog services and publish fotos to both Flickr and Photo bucket. I am sure Windows Live Writer is a great tool although I haven't tried it yet.

Web Operating System

So now something called a web OS has come and joined the world of web 2.0.

At Desktoptwo you can register to use an online web based desktop. It is built in Flash and offers a feel of a regular PC desktop with 1GB space for free and applications and features like e-mail, address book, blog publishing, IM client, MP3 player, Program editor, Acrobat reader, Open Office, Browser and more.



I registered but had some connectivity problems so I didn't get a chance to provide a review. Take a look at Go2Web2 for a good review with more screen shots.

Chat client for multiple instant messaging services

Do you chat?
Well, I use MSN Messenger for private use and Sametime for work related chat. I also have a Google Talk account but there is not much activity going on there, I guess it's too early.

Anyway, wouldn't it be nice to use only one client for all the instant messaging services you use? Hardly any news that it is possible. I tried to make it work with Trillian a year ago, but it failed for sametime. Now, I have found Kool IM.



It's a web-based client and you need to register on the site to start using it. It's very easy to start using. The following clients are supported:

AIM Google Talk ICQ IRC Inbox Jabber MSN RSS Channel Sametime Stocks channel Yahoo

For those of you who don't know what Sametime is, I can very briefly explain that it is a chat client that connects to a Sametime server or actually it is a Domino server with Sametime functionality add-ons. Sametime can connect to the server via a web browser, a desktop client or through Lotus Notes. It's primarily used for work and not for private matters like MSN.

What's new in WebSphere Portal 6 ?

Websphere portal 6 was released on july 26th.

Some of new the features are

• improved user experience
• additional personalization capabilities
• composite application capabilities
• Simplified portlet creation (websphere (bowstreet) portlet factory)
• Multiple LDAP support

Websphere portal 6 comes in three editions; WebSphere Portal Server, WebSphere Portal enable and WebSphere Portal Extend.

Change the Windows XP Boot Graphic

I read an old post on gHacks Tech News about how to change the windows XP Boot Graphic. I tried it and it's pretty cool so I have to write about it for those of you who haven't seen it before. Follow the intructions by downloading bootskin and get more skins at winCustomize. It's freeware and it makes only temporary changes. According to gHacks the default settings are back when uninstalling bootskin.

I downloaded and tried one with a Superman Returns theme. Take a look at it here:



Unfortunately I couldn't find a lotus related bootskin, other than the car ;-)

Install your Lotus Notes client on a USB key

Declan Lynch reports on his blog that in IBM Lotus Notes Domino 7.0.2 Beta the feature Nomad is available. This means that the entire Lotus Notes client can be installed onto a USB key and startup will all your settings on any windows machine. It will take up approximately 340 MB.

Declan writes...
I could quit notes and move the USB key to another machine and everything worked as if it was installed locally. I also had the full notes client installed on one of the machine I put the USB key into and the Lotus Nomad install did not interfere with the installed client in any way. It was also nice to see that nomad worked perfectly when I plugged the USB key into a Windows Vista beta machine.

It will only work for the Lotus Notes client though. Here's how to make it work for admin and designer clients. He continues...
To turn your recently installed Lotus Nomad client into a Lotus Admin Designer Nomad client you just need to copy over 4 files to the USB Key :

designer.exe
events4.ntf
domadmin.ntf

This can be done by any user since Nomad requires only standard privileges. It only writes to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry key.

Google's list of domain names

Neil Patel on Pronet Advertising has by searching the web and using a domain lookup tool gathered a list of Google's domain names, currently 520 of them and increasing with the incoming comments on his post.

The most amazing and unexpected one's (if this is true) must be googlemotherfucker.com and googleporn.com but I guess (hope) that's because no one else should get that domain name and associate with Google.

Flock

Have you seen the new web browser Flock?
It has similar features as Firefox with downloadable themes and extensions. It's currently a beta and you can either take the tour or download it.



The different features that are most obvious is the integration with Flickr or Photobucket and blog services like blogger.com. It's possible to write blogposts from the browser.

Look at the integration with Flickr in the browser window. It also has drag-and-drop features.

Google Suggest

Hardly any breaking news, but for anyone who haven't seent it yet.

Google Suggest gives suggestions to search words along with the hit results as you type them into the search field. This is done with AJAX. Take a look at these screenshots:

Trace server

Maybe some Notes users or IT-support personal come across this blog. Here's a tip for you.

In some organizations their are sometimes problems to connect to domino servers for a whole lot of reasons. One thing you can try is to trace the server.
If the client has lost its route to the server the trace makes the client "find" the server again.

Here's how to do it:

• Chose File -> Preferences -> User Preferences in the Notes client and select 'Ports' in the box that opens up
  
  
  
  
  
  
• Press the trace button to the right and the following box opens up
  
  
  
  You can type in the server's name in the destination field. Either you just use the common name that is 'Server1' or the full hierarchical name. Press 'Trace' and a trace is made. If everything is going well it should look something like this when searching for the common name:
  
  Determining path to server Server1
  Available Ports: TCPIP
  Checking normal priority connection documents only...
  Allowing wild card connection documents...
  Checking for Server1/OU/O at last known address 'Server1' on TCPIP...
  Connected to server Server1/OU/O
  
  If this doesn't work try tracing using the domino servers IP address. When doing so:
  
  1. You're not dependent of the DNS to work
  2. A connection document is created in your personal addressbook

Compare two databases to check for differences

I am using a tool called Teamstudio Delta when I need to compare two different databases by design or by data. I use it either to compare two replicas or to compare a database with its template.




Choose server and database and then the option on whether to compare design or data.



Using the smart filter I can look at the differences between the two databases.

Since it's not freeware it limits the use to the number of licenses you or your company have bought.

"I have cleaned my mail box - but nothing happens"

This is a sentence that I often hear of among users of Lotus Notes where I work. The users have mail quota restrictions so they have to maintain the mail box and delete e-mails every day. However for most users the quota is never enough and I understand that. I have no restriction myself and that is a well-deserved privilege for a Notes administrator ;-)

So why does it happen and what can we do about it?

First of all, most users don't clean their mail box as good as they claim. The users tend to delete simple e-mails that don't contain any attachments. When they have deleted 20 or so they believe that they have made a great offert and wonder why there is no difference, why nothing happens...

The key to clean your mailbox efficiently is the 'All Documents' view.



Sort the view by size and you'll see all of the e-mails in your mail database, not just the one in your inbox but also sent e-mails and e-mails that you have put in folders.



They are now sorted by size and you can more easily find the large one's that will make a difference in trying to reduce the size of your mail box.

Now either delete the e-mail directly or delete the attachment or save the attachment to disk and then delete it from the e-mail.



Deleting these e-mails will not show any effect for the user. The mail box has to be compacted. The user has the option to do so by pressing the compact button that can be found in the database properties under the information tab. Compacting performed by the user will however only be helpful if the quota hasn't been overridden. If so, white space is created where the e-mails used to be and new e-mails can take their place (or calendar entries etc.). If the quota has been reached and the user has received notifications about that, a compact will not stop the notifications to continue. The reason for this is that no file size reduction takes place when a user performs a compact. But if you maintain a mail box well and delete e-mails every day, space will be available for new e-mails and the mail box does not have to grow at all.



Press the '% used' button (figure above) to see how much space in the mail box that is being used. In this example 92,3% of the mail box is filled with data. In theory 7,7% can be set free when a compact with file size reduction is performed.

Compact with file size reduction never occurs unless an administrator does it or makes it happend. Either you can do it when the problem arises for a user or you can set up a program document that does it on a weekly schedule or so.

1. On the console: load compact mail\xxx.nsf -B (compact xxx.nsf with file size red.)

A recommendation would be to create a program document that executes a compact -b every night for all users mail files. And once a week a program document that executes compact -B for all users mail files.

Blog Summer Camp beta 2006

I read on the swedish blog 'Fyra nyanser av brunt' that there is a Blog Summer Camp 2006 going on this year in Germany. It is a test/beta course about what blogging is all about and how to blog held by Oliver Gassner virtually through his blog and a Google group mailinglist.

Changes in Internet site documents don't work

Changes in Internet site documents, especially Web Site documents don't work. When I have made a change in a web site document like changing the number of default lines per view page, the change doesn't come through, nothing happens, still the same problem. It was very confusing and irritating until I found the problem.

What you do is that you open the server document and look at the Basics tab. Disable the field 'Load Internet configurations from Server\Internet Sites documents'.



All the settings that before could be seen and adjusted in the web site document now can be found under tab 'Internet Protocols -> Domino Web Engine'. You will probably notice that the number of default lines per view page still is the old value and not the one you tried to change it into in the web site document. Change the value here, enable 'Load Internet configurations...' and save the server document and the change finally works and is also visible in the web site document.

I should add that this happens for a Domino 6.5.4 server on iSeries and I can't speak for other environments. Please leave a comment if you have any experiences on this.

Red box of death

Have you ever heard of the red box of death? You probably have if you have been working with Notes for a while. Here is a bad quality screenshot from a swedish installation where the rbod occurred. This occured when a user was about to read a document in a lotus notes application like many times before. Unexplainable!



Maybe someone can explain why it occurs or what to do when it happens but from my experience the best thing to do is just to ignore what just happend or maybe reboot the client (and perhaps the server).

The man behind Lotus Notes advances in Microsoft!

Near the end of 1984, Ray Ozzie founded Iris Associates Inc., under contract and funded by Lotus, to develop the first release of Lotus Notes. The first release of Notes (1.0) shipped in 1989. Read the long story about the history of Notes and Domino.

On March 10, 2005, Microsoft acquired Groove Networks. Groove's founder was Ray Ozzie and he became chief technology officer of Microsoft.

Google Browser Sync

"Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions. For more info, please visit our FAQ.

Please note: Google Browser Sync must update your browser settings whenever you start Firefox. This will increase the start-up time of Firefox (the time between clicking on the Firefox icon and loading your start page) – please bear with us as we work to decrease this delay."


A new firefox extension called Google Browser Sync is available for download. Using a google account it is now possible to share browser settings like form data, history, cookies, bookmarks etc. among several different computers.

You have to download the extension on every computer you wish to share the firefox browser settings with. It's a really good idea but everytime firefox is started a synchronization has to be done which takes some time though.




I like the restore feature. When firefox has started you can choose to restore the tabs you had opened when you last used firefox, just like what the Lotus Notes 7 client offers.

When the now famous TPB was taken down by the swedish police or whoever was responsible on may 31, it very clearly showed that the Internet traffic to a great deal consists of file sharing. It actually decreased by 20% when TPB was down if I have got the numbers right.

Bowstreet Portlet Factory

A short and very brief description of Bowstreet Portlet Factory...

Bowstreet is a company that was acquired by IBM in december 2005. The correct name now is WebSphere Portlet Factory. Here are the release notes.

The tool is used to rapidly creating portlets accessing back-end data like Domino, SAP, Siebel and other enterprise information systems for the WebSphere Portal environment.

There are more than 100 builders included in WebSphere Portlet Factory. A builder is a customizable, reusable component which generates XML, Java and JSP for specific portlet functionality.

A developer can create new portlets by first creating a new model or application container and then add builders to the model. Thus, a model is a sequence of builders. It is possible to create your own builders by writing java classes.

A portlet is a larger catalog structure in the file system which is compressed into a WAR-file and then placed into the WebSphere Portal Server.

A couple of examples of what you can do with WebSphere Portlet Factory is web services portlets, portlets with AJAX-functionality and Domino specific portlets.

WebSphere Portlet Factory can be used integrated with the Eclipse platform or with Rational Application Developer (RAD).

Alternatives to WebSphere Portlet Factory is RAD or Workplace Designer. RAD is much more advanced, it provides more functionality but hence it is probably more difficult to use. Workplace Designer has not got as much functionality as RAD. What you need depends on what you want to do. According to IBM there will probably be a merge of two or more of these tools.

RAD is included with WebSphere Portal Server with 1 license per CPU.

About roaming #3

At LotusPhere 2006 I asked the experts a question about roaming.

Why is 'Inherit design from Master template' turned off for the bookmark.nsf, journal.nsf and names.nsf that gets created for a Roaming user?

I spoke with Shobha Hiremath who was taking over the role as the roaming expert. She got back to me in february with an answer ->

It used to be turned on and that was a problem! If the roaming databases were client only databases we didn't have to worry about their design being changed by the server when the server is upgraded. Since these files are on the server, when someone upgrades them from Domino 6 to something newer, the new template design will replace the design of the client databases on the server. If the new template does not work with the old client then the user will be in trouble and may not be able to use their files.

That makes sense!

About roaming #2

In the previous post about roaming I mentioned that it is possible to look at the userid that is attached to the personal addressbook using NotesPeek. The userid and the information about the userid (which is a bunch of $-fields) actually resides in a profiledocument in the personal addressbook called 'roaminguserid'.

This picture shows that there is a file ($FILE) attached to the roaminguserid form in the personal addressbook. Marking the $FILE shows that it is a UserID. If you mark the object below 'Object 0x53a' some information about the ID is actually visible. For example, If you look closely you can see who the people are that are allowed to recover password for this ID.




This picture shows a case where the user has two attached files to his/her personal addressbook. The first one is the UserID and the second one is UserDic (User Dictionary).



Since the information is stored in a profile document it is possible to change the values of the field and to remove the userid if you would find that useful. Simply do this by creating a new form in your (or the user you want to check) addressbook named 'roaminguserid'. Create fields in this form named as the fields you want to look at, like $Name and $PrefMailFile. If you want to grab the UserID, simply create a rich text field and name it $FILE.

Now create a formula agent, 'EditProfileDocument', with the following code:

Open up the addressbook in the Notes Client and launch the agent by clicking on 'Actions' in the menu and then choose 'EditProfileDocument'.

Enable the out-of-office agent for another user

*** Update ***
In version 8 the mail router has new functionality called the Out of Office service which requires a Lotus Domino 8 server, Lotus Notes 8 client and Lotus Notes 8 mail template. The agent can still be used for backwards compatability requiring only the client and the template. The benefits of the new service are instant response time, fail-over support, automatic disabling, shorter duration times and delegation support (for both the agent and the service).

After version 6 of Notes/Domino it is possible to enable the out-of-office agent for someone else than yourself. You need some access and the designer client though. The development team are currently working on a way to get this feature into the Notes client. Until then we have to do this from the other end. Here's how to do it:

• Open the user's mail database in Domino Designer -> MailServer / mail /xxx.nsf
• Open the agent view
• Mark/highlight the agent '(EditOfficeProfile)'
• Choose 'agent' from the menu and the 'Run'
• A popup screen appears where you can adjust some info like the dates and text to be displayed. Press 'Ok', do not press 'Enable'
• Open up the agent 'OutOfOffice'
• In the agent properties, choose second tab (the one with the key)
• Type the hierarchical name of the person you want to enable the agent for in the 'Run on behalf of'-field
  
  
  
  
• Go back to the first tab in the agent properties window and check which server that the agent runs on. That is, click on the schedule-button and make sure that the mailserver is listed there.
• Save the agent
• Let the agent be marked/highlighted and choose 'agent' from the menu and the 'Enable'
• Done!

Change field values in a document

I read about a tip by Thomas Adrian on notessidan.se on how to review fields in a document in a smart way.

I have a similar thing but less informative. Use it to view field information but also to change the value of a chosen field. It comes very handy to use when I need to change a field that is not in edit mode (compose), for example when I need to change the roaming subdirectory for a user in a person document. In the figure below I can type in a category where the marker is and press OK. The value of the field will change. Remember that sometimes you have to be in edit mode for the change to occur.



Here's the code:

1. Add a new button in File -> preferences -> toolbar preferences
2. Paste the following formula code

About roaming #1

I have had quite a lot to do with roaming. In the company in which I am responsible for the Domino administration and Domino environment we introduced roaming as it came in the early N/D 6 release (I was not employed at that time). It was not implemented quite by the book so consequently it didn't work as it should.
I have read a lot of information about roaming and have come to the understanding that not too many companies use roaming as roaming should be used. All of our employees move around the office using a different computer every day. I believe the roaming feature was released too soon. There are still things that don't work in a logic way and I will talk about roaming and my/our experience of roaming from time to time.

But for now let me just give you facts about roaming that I know at least two very experienced Domino administrators didn't know of. Maybe you have missed it too...

• The user id located on the client (usually in Document & Settings//Local Settings/Application Data/Lotus/Notes/Data/) must be named "user.id" with lower case letters
• Three databases are sent to and from the server during the roaming, that usually takes place when starting and when shutting the client down. These are names.nsf, journal.nsf and bookmark.nsf). names.nsf is the personal addressbook. When roaming down to the client these databases are copied to the directory mentioned above together with the user.id and other local stuff.
  
  In the personal addressbok located on the server (the roaming folder), the user.id is attached with double encryption. You can take a look at it using for example notespeek and actually even see some information about the id.
  
  It is important to remove the user id from the person document to make the roaming work correctly, but before doing that make sure the id has been copied to a safe location or at least be sure that it has been attached to the personal addressbok or else the roaming will not work.

Unable to connect to domino server from notes client

I have learned the hard way that renaming domino servers should be avoided if possible. However if it has been done you might bump into problems with reaching domino servers from the notes clients due to the fact that old server names still might be listed here and there in the environment. This is typically noticed when using bookmarks.

If there are references to the old servername left somewhere on the client, the bookmarks has a tendency of pointing to the old servername even if you specifically fix them. This also happens when using bookmarks through policies. It doesn't matter if you add new bookmarks with a reference to the correct servername, the old servername comes back and is globally spread to the organization through the policy. It doesn't make it easier that bookmark policies works fine when adding policies but works poorly for changing or removing bookmarks. This gave me some grey hairs because it resulted in that the organization got duplicates of all policy-based bookmarks.

It is a tough one to find out what to do but I have some tip that might help you:

• When clicking on a bookmark in the client or trying to open a database using Ctrl-O, the notes client first looks for information in the cache. If the cache doesn't help a lookup is done in catalog.nsf. The problem is that if the cache contains old server names it will not help. If catalog.nsf is not correct established or used it will not help either which will result in that the client will not find the server. In this case a trace might help you. Try the hierarchical server name first, second try the ip which also will create a connection document in the personal address book to that server. A trace is not a solution in the long run for a larger organization because it has to be done by user. First try to make the cache work and then fix the catalog.
  
• Clear cache fields in the location document
  Clear references to the old server name. These are located in the location document in the personal NAB or on the server. Read more about this in this technote.
• Establish catalog.nsf correctly
  There should be a catalog.nsf on every Domino server in the domain and these are replicas of each other. A catalog.nsf can list databases only on that server or it can be a domain catalog which means that it lists all databases on all servers in the domain, that is it is Domain catalog enabled in the server document. Look at the picture below. The field 'Catalog/domain search server' shows which server that are used as a catalog server. That server should thus be Domain catalog enabled because it will then point out the way to other databases on other servers which could be the target for a bookmark. If the field is empty the home/mail server is used by default. Also make sure that the catalog task runs as it should on every server. I believe the default is at 01:00 every night.
  
  
  

• One more reason for getting the error message "unable to connect to server..." is actually wrong. The reason can be if you're trying to access the database through a document link, view link or a bookmark and you are not listed in the ACL of the database.

I wonder how much this cost Microsoft? Some gossip told me earlier at LotusPhere that he several times has been offered about 7 times his IBM salary, but that's just gossip of course...

IBM announces 31 SOA products, including Ajax portal

IBM has announced 11 new products and 20 enhancements to its WebSphere-based software.

Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive, IBM Software Group, says that the SOA software market is not yet mature but the products will help customers getting started.

SOA projects are the target for models the software group has tailored to several vertical industries. IBM has enhanced its Banking Information FrameWork and Insurance Application Architecture models.
